Kolsyn Elijah Hatton is flying high.

A senior at Jennings County High School, Hatton made his first solo flight April 15 at Seymour Municipal Airport under the ground supervision of his certified flight instructor, Jake Wilamowski, according to a news release.

Hatton was recently awarded the Experimental Aircraft Association 1328’s second EAA Ray Scholarship.

“Just ask any airline, corporate or military pilot and they will tell you that your first solo is a flight that no pilot ever forgets,” the association said in a news release.

Following his flight, his mother, Missy Gresham, cut out his shirt tail. Doing so is a time-honored tradition that includes writing the date, the student’s name, airport and aircraft number on it, then hang it on the wall of the airport, organizers said.

For his effort, Hatton will receive a noise-canceling headset from Lightspeed as part of the scholarship program.

EAA 1328 will be awarding one more Ray scholarship soon. Successful scholars who earn their pilot certificates help ensure that we will have more scholarships in the future.\EAA 1328 is hosting a Young Eagle Rally on May 18 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., providing free airplane rides for kids 8 to 17.
