Gen. Umbarger to retire from Nat'l Guard
Major General R. Martin Umbarger has announced his retirement as Adjutant General of Indiana in May 2015, after 45 years of service.
Umbarger played a major role in the development of the former Muscatatuck State Developmental Hospital near Butlerville.

New curator at Freeman Army Field Museum
The Freeman Army Air Field Museum board recently appointed Larry Bothe as curator. Bothe, a museum director, previously served as president of the museum for several years, and is a Vietnam veteran and commercial pilot.

Residents honored for their community work
North Vernon Kiwanis held their yearly banquet on Sept. 18 at the Vernon Tea House.
Lt. Governor Jim Bullard of the Heartland division inducted the 2014-2015 officers and board of directors. Elected were: President, Eric Jarboe, President-Elect Don Goecker; Treasurer, Bill Ludwig; and Secretary, Carlyle Floyd.
Tom Moore was recognized as Kiwanian of the Year. Rita Hurley was recognized for her work with the Prevent Child Abuse Jennings County and was named North Vernon Kiwanis Citizen of the Year.

State agency nominates regional child advocacy center for a nat'l award
The Children's Advocacy Center (CAC) of Southeastern Indiana has been nominated by the Indiana Office of Community and Rural Affairs (OCRA) for a national award from the Council of State Community Development Agencies.
Kathleen Weissenber-ger, director of grant services for the Indiana Office of Community and Rural Affairs, nominated the local Children's Advocacy Center for the award that "recognizes state programs that have demonstrated, during a sustained period, positive results in improving the lives of lower income persons."
