The Jennings County Evonomic Development Commission hosted a reception this month before the start of school for new Jennings County Schools Superintendent Dr. Teresa Brown. Jennings County's own Sandy Vance is recognized statewide as 'Torchbearer'
A local person known for her lifelong commitment to helping people was among eight women in the state honored by the Indiana Commission for Women (ICW) as a 2017 Torchbearer.
Jennings' own Sandy Vance was inducted into this elite group Saturday evening, September 27 at the ICW's annual event at the Indiana Historical Society in Indianapolis.
The Torchbearer Awards Ceremony recognizes women of Indiana who have been pioneers throughout their lives or who have stepped forward as leaders by breaking down barriers. These women are beacons of light with stories of courage, perseverance, and compassion that create a lasting legacy and inspiration for us all.

Indiana Bicentennial Torch Relay receives prestigious national awards
The U.S. Travel Asso­ciation announced the recipients of its 2017 Mercury Awards during the 34th annual ESTO conference, held in Minne­apolis, and the Indiana Office of Tourism Develop­ment (IOTD) was awarded best Public Relations Campaign for the Indiana Bicentennial Torch Relay.
The Mercury Awards recognize U.S. Travel Association members for excellence and creative accomplishment in state destination marketing and promotional programs.

CASA welcomes eight new volunteers to assist children in their time of need
As Advocates for Children continues to work to provide advocates for a record number of children suffering abuse and neglect, eight new volunteers have stepped forward to take up the cause in Bartholomew and Jennings counties.
Having completed a six-week training course that qualifies them to serve as a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) volunteer, these community members were sworn in by Bartholomew County Juvenile Magistrate Heather Mollo.
In their new role, these advocates will guarantee that the best interests of the children they serve remain front and center when their cases come before judges like Mollo.
But their work doesn't begin or end in the courtroom.

Chance to mold a new position draws Castetter to new JCSC job
Shannon Castetter is the Jennings County School Corporation's brand new Human Resources Coordinator. A North Vernon local, born and bred, Castetter has a job history connecting her to the CenterStone mental health facility. There she worked as a group home coordinator, state liaison, and much more. She also was the director of the nonprofit, Red Oak Industries, which assisted the mentally disabled in the task of getting jobs.

Former residents endow VU scholarship geared to help students succeed
A Vincennes University scholarship has been established in memory of the late Brett Allison Adams who passed away on Aug. 30, 2011. She was the daughter of Dr. Cy and Mrs. Peggy Adams, formally of North Vernon, and now residents of Vincennes.
Established by funds from her family through the Vincennes University Foundation, the Brett Allison Adams Possibility Fund Scholarship is the third scholarship endowed with the Foundation in her memory.
