12/3/2018 12:51:00 PM Problem home in Vernon is given another 60 days to get cleaned up
Deborah Freeman was back in court last week for a hearing on the status of her home at 275 East Brown Street, Vernon. The condition of the home was first brought to the attention of Superior Court Judge Gary Smith this past June.
The Area Plan Commission requested intervention June 28 after it was determined there was an infestation of rats at the home. Since then, Freeman has been evicted from the home and extermination has been ongoing, first through the APC then at Freeman's own expense. In August, the court ordered the homeowner to clean-up the home's exterior and grounds. In September, Judge Smith gave Freeman 60 days to clean up the interior of the home and set another review hearing on Nov. 26. Freeman believes she can make the home inhabitable; however, the APC and health department have raised questions about all the damage the rats have done to interior walls, wiring, etc.
At the hearing last week, the judge ordered Freeman to continue with the pest extermination process and ordered the Area Plan Commission and a representative of the JC Board of Heath to inspect the inside of the home. They are to report their findings at a hearing set Jan. 14 at 3:15 p.m.
