January 1 has nothing on January 10, the official start of the 2018 election scene and the first day candidates can formally file for their positions. It undoubtedly will be a busy week, predicted Jennings County Clerk Mary Kilgore and her Election Deputy Brenda King. Who will be the first to file? Probably Sheriff Gary Driver, the women predicted. In addition to the sheriff's job being elected, other positions open are: County Assessor County Auditor County Clerk County Recorder Commissioner-Dist. 3 County Council - Districts 1, 2, 3 and 4 Prosecuting Attorney Township Trustees Trustee Board Members State Representatives- Disricts 67 and 69 State Senator-Dist. 43 U.S. Representative-District 6 U.S. Senator. The two political parties will also elect convention state delegates in the primary and the Democrats will elect Precinct Committee people in the primary. The last day a candidate can file to run for office is Friday, Feb. 9 at noon. And, if you happen to change your mind about campaigning, you have until noon on Monday, Feb. 12 to formally withdraw from the race. Kilgore and King have been working the past few weeks preparing for their busy season and getting packets of information prepared for candidates. Packets include Declaration of Candidacy; Statement of Economic Interests (conflict of interest); statement of organization; and financial report. There are many ins and outs of running for office which most are not aware of until they throw their hat in the ring. For example, financial re-ports do not have to be completed if the job you are seeking pays less than $5000/year. How-ever, if you spend $500 or more and/or given donations of $500 or more, you have to fill the forms out. The Election Office is open daily M-F from 8 to 4 p.m. to answer any questions or concerns. School Board File for this office starting July 25 to noon on Aug. 24. A petition is needed with signatures from at least 10 voters residing in the candidate's district. Four positions are up: 2 At-Large, and 2 from District 4 (Center Township).
