4/28/2014 2:01:00 PM Voting continues as does business of getting elected
With the Primary Election next week, Election Clerk Brenda King reminds residents that walk-in voting continues until noon Monday, May 5, the day before the actual Primary. Also, the election office will again be open this Saturday, May 3, for those wishing to cast ballots ahead of time. Absentee ballots are due at the courthouse on Election Day. King says she will be checking the Vernon Post Office throughout the day to pick up any new mail. Over the past week, the election office sent out 151 Democratic ballots and 82 Republican for a total of 233. There were 57 walk-in voters. All candidates required to submit their Pre-Primary Report on Receipts and Expenditures did so this go-round. The Election Board met Friday afternoon to go over the reports to ensure compliance. Present were: JC Clerk Mary Kilgore; GOP representative Cadie Mathis; and Karen Snyder, sitting in as the Demo member. The one question that arose was whether or not Superior Court Judge candidate Jack Gay had filled out his form correctly. The candidate noted he had not spent any money and that he had no donations to date. The Election Board voted to ask the candidate about this, as his signs, an obvious expenditure, are up around the county. Gay later told this reporter he has complied perfectly with the law, which does not require candidates to report money they personally spent outside of their campaign committees .
Overall, most expenditures from candidates were in contested races, with the sheriff race and superior court judge race having the largest outlay of money.
