After leading until the very end of regulation with Jacob Vogel having a stellar night, Jennings County lost 71-66 in overtime Friday at Franklin in the Panthers' last high school boys basketball game of the regular season.

"We got off to a good start at Franklin and led the entire game until the last shot in regulation," said Coach Josh Land of Jennings County (12-11). "I thought we took our foot off the gas pedal after we got an early lead."

Drew Byerly, a 6-3 senior for Franklin (10-10), led all scorers with 32 points.

Vogel, a 6-8 sophomore, had 20 points (8 of 20 field goals with 3 of 4 3-pointers, 1 of 2 free throws) and 8 rebounds to pace the Panthers. Keegan Manowitz added 14 points and Carson McNulty 11 points for Jennings County.

"Jacob played very well," Land said.

Jennings County failed to take advantage of that, however.

"Our help defense was slow all night long," lamented Land. "We let their best player (Byerly) get to the rim all night long and then missed some crucial free throws and had a couple bad turnovers in the fourth quarter."

March Madness
starts Tuesday
Jennings County will next go into the postseason, facing New Albany (14-9) at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in the second game of the Class 4A Seymour Sectional.
The state tournament series is Indiana high school's version of March Madness.
The Panthers lost 56-43 to the Bulldogs during the regular season on Feb. 6 in North Vernon.
"Against New Albany we must keep the ball in front of us and be really good on the glass to win," Land noted. "Caden Stanton, their point guard, must be contained and kept out of the lane. Offensively, we must finish easy plays at the rim and will have to shoot the ball well. I look for them to really come after Keegan and try to turn us over. We will be prepared and I know our guys believe they can win. "
The Semour Sectional features a balanced field with only one team, Seymour, with a losing record this season, but the Owls can't be overlooked either, according to Land.
"I don't think there are any clear cut favorites in this year's sectional," he said. "Jeffersonville is probably playing better than anyone right now but they can be beat. Floyd Central and Bedford North Lawrence both have players that can singlehandedly take over the game from a scoring perspective. Seymour's defense will keep them in the game.
"It should be a great sectional and I hope we have a great crowd on Tuesday night!" Land added.
