Tariff greatly hurts local journalism
It isn't that easy to drop everything in the middle of the week and fly to Washington. If you're a community newspaper publisher, going anywhere in the middle of the week is a challenge. That is when the newspaper has to be edited, wrapped up in color, printed, labeled and distributed to readers.
People in Mayville, Wis., where I publish the Dodge County Pionier, count on my paper.

While News-Sentinel.com may rarely agree with The New York Times' editorial positions, we do agree with much of what Times publisher A.G. Sulzberger had to say in a private White House meeting with President Trump, at which he says he "implored" the president to reconsider his broad attacks on journalists.

How to get involved in democracy
Back in 1883, Teddy Roosevelt wrote an essay on what it takes to be a true American citizen. He did not mince words. "The people who say that they have not time to attend to politics are simply saying that they are unfit to live in a free community," he wrote. "Their place is under a despotism." He went on: "The first duty of an American citizen, then, is that he shall work in politics."
