Let's stop Zika virus in its tracks
Zika Virus is "a bit scarier than we initially thought."
That was the warning from a Centers for Diseases Control and Prevention spokesperson during a White House briefing earlier this month.
It was a pretty unsettling update that made headlines across the country, and for good reason.
The virus, which is typically spread by mosquitoes, started to move quickly through Brazil last May. Since then, thousands of people in dozens of countries have been infected by Zika, including residents of both Indiana and Ohio who contracted the virus overseas.
In fact, the World Health Organization declared the Zika virus a global health emergency that could infect more than 4 million people by the end of the year. And, right now, there are no known vaccines, treatments, or rapid diagnostic tests for the virus.

Transparency alone is not enough
Over more than three decades in Congress, I had the chance to question a lot of federal officials. Most of the time I wasn't after anything dramatic - I just wanted to understand who was responsible for certain decisions. Want to know how often I got a straight answer? Almost never.
It was easily one of the most frustrating aspects of trying to ensure robust oversight of the government. Our representatives' job, after all, is to help make government work better. And you can't do that if you don't know whom to hold accountable for important decisions. I don't want to be unfair to officials in the executive branch, many of whom are dedicated public servants who work long hours to serve the rest of us. But they have raised to an art form the ability to dodge responsibility.

Changes in farmland assessments
For the second year in a row, the Indiana General Assembly made major changes to the farmland assessment formula. This time it probably will deliver actual property tax cuts for farmland owners - and tax increases for everyone else.

'Rebooting' journalism and a free press
The rising global furor over the trove of financial records and other documents contained in the Panama Papers also speaks to any number of Digital Age canards about journalism and a free press.
