Togetherness helps us persevere
As the state representative for our local communities, I have the pleasure of sharing in some of our area's greatest moments and accomplishments.
However, with that, I also witness some of our darkest moments as well.
While traveling the district last week and earlier this week, the flood damage sustained to homes and the families who built them was overwhelming.
In particular, several families in Madison lost everything.
Amidst the devastation though, I also witnessed a sense of togetherness in our communities. Since the rain has subsided, countless Hoosiers both near and far have stepped up to help.

Congress needs insiders and outsiders
Members of Congress get categorized in all sorts of ways.
They're liberal or conservative; Republican or Democrat; interested in domestic affairs or specialists in foreign policy.
There's one very important category, though, that I never hear discussed: whether a member wants to be an inside player or an outside player.
Yet where members fall on the continuum helps to shape the institution of Congress.
First, I should say that the categories are not hard and fast. Some politicians are insiders part of the time and outsiders at other times.

Hoosier workers' aren't commodities
A recent study published in "Economic Development Quarterly" helped answer an age-old paradox surrounding business location decisions. This study was a survey of recently relocated businesses.
As expected, CEOs said that the availability of a trained and ready workforce was the prime consideration for the selection of the new location. Likewise, the executives reported that they favored a general tax reduction over tax incentives.
No surprises here. What was shocking is that only 30 percent of CEOs knew that their company received tax incentives.
