Debate over gun rights continues

Readers continue to respond on social media to "Gun rights resolution controversy," The Sun, Feb. 11.

"It does make you wonder what it would actually mean? The Constitution does not mention guns, it defends the right for 'militias.' Now will the sheriff allow full automatic weapons? What about grenades? What about RPGs (rocket-propelled grenades)? Those are all weapons that any modern militia will have. Switzerland is a good example. So what defines what is allowed and who defines what a militia is? Personally I'm glad that people can't purchase things like anti-aircraft missiles, tanks, grenades and especially nuclear weapons. Like I said, the word 'gun' is nowhere in the Constitution." - Ben Voiles

"Ben Voiles, when Joe Biden says your gun rights don't matter anyway because the American military can just bomb you if necessary, maybe you need to think about what we could be in for down the road." -
Mary Fleming

"Here's the deal, guys. We need an ordinance stating that no county assets will be used to infringe on our constitutional rights, not just the Second Amendment resolution that is no more than a promise. But to think our own county government would use our own tax dollars and assets that we pay for to infringe on our God given rights. That is not acceptable. Every county commissioner has to take an oath to uphold and protect its citizens that they work for. There's no reason why anyone should have to ask the commissioners to do this. If they are concerned at all, which they should be, considering what's happening in Virginia and Arizona, they would do their job and take the initiative themselves and sign an ordinance immediately. If you want to point fingers at anyone, start with those who actually can make it a law rather than a promise. Again, it's the commissioners' job to be protecting us in cases like this. They are the only ones who can make it an ordinance. So why haven't they?" - Kelly Davis

"I don't even like guns, I don't know anything about them, but I know many that do. My point is, why does the government feel as if they have to control everything in our life? It's almost like we lost our voice in many things, not just this." - Toni Foist

"Such a stupid decision. Y'all need to resign and apologize to Jennings County. Shame on your lack of knowledge of gun violence!" - Rita Risner

"This proposal is not in effect until it is adopted by the Board of Commissioners, which hasn't happened. Sheriffs do not make policy." - Jane Coquerille

"You want to end gun violence? Have felons and their property searched periodically to make sure they don't have guns." - Mary Fleming

"Commissioners are [expletive deleted]. Wait till you see your local taxes this year." - Chris Carter
