Kisses and hisses

■ KISSES and a fond farewell to Jack Modlin, who died last Saturday at the age of 83. He was a good man and quite the lawn mower technician.

■ KISSES to the Jennings County Retired Teachers Association for distributing $1,000 in grants for education programs in local schools.

■ KISSES to Jennings County High School student-athlete Cameron Woodard on his sportsmanship as his outstanding three years of wrestling ended last Saturday at the Evansville Semi-state.

■ KISSES to Jennings County High School student-athlete Alexis Giltner for qualifying for the Indiana High School Wrestling Coaches Association's freshman-sophomore state meet. The sophomore is proving that females can wrestle with the best of them.

■ KISSES to Richard "Bud" Beesley and Richard Adrian for being honored by the Jennings County Farmers' Market for their great work, all volunteer, in boosting the program over the years.

■ KISSES and good luck to Seth Hulse on the release of his new self-help book, "Teen Focus." The book includes a few photos of several students and staff at Jennings County High School, where Hulse is an educator.

■ KISSES and good luck to Steve Schoettmer of Elizabethtown on being selected as the new chairman of the Bartholomew County Democratic Party. He is well known in Jennings County, including as a candidate two years ago for the Indiana House of Representatives in District 69.

■ KISSES to Denny Hamlin on winning the Daytona 500 Monday. Hisses to the final lap wreck in the season-opening NASCAR race that resulted in the serious injuries to Ryan Newman.

■ HISSES to having to do without an automobile for over a week while waiting for mechanical repairs to be made. Kisses that the repairs are finally completed and at a less-than-expected expense.

■ KISSES to Jeff Bezos to announcing the Earth Fund and pledging $10 billion to fight climate change, our planet's biggest threat.

■ HISSES to the worsening humanitarian crises along the Syria-Turkey border where 900,000 starving refugees are seeking food and shelter.
