Great outside-the-box idea on work-release program
Dear Editor,

Kudos to Rose Acres Farms and the Jennings County Sheriff's Office for their teamwork in developing a true work-release program for qualifying jail inmates.

Isn't there a way to stop flower thefts at cemetery?
Dear Editor,

A recent situation leads me to write this letter to the editor and to all the readers of this newspaper.

Memorial Day, or Decoration Day, as it was originally called, is a time when one honors those who have died. It is especially a time to honor those who have fallen in battle, but also a time to honor beloved family members who have gone on before.

Recommends watching interview of 'Courage' author
Dear Editor,

Perhaps I can give another clue, dear editor, to those who read with mysticism what I wrote in my last letter to this community newspaper ("Breaking the silence," May 9).

How property tax revenue is spent in the City of NV
Dear Editor,

I'm writing you this in response to Mr. Brooks, who recently reached out to you in his letter to the editor ("Property tax questions," May 16) and posed the question, "I ask our public officials, what are the property taxes being spent on?"

As one of your public officials, I'll do my best to answer your question in the hope that my answer helps anyone interested or curious as to how their property tax dollars are being spent.

55 years after the final bell at Vernon High School
Dear Editor,

Fifty-five years ago this month, the final bell rang at Vernon High School. Thirty-plus bright young faces joined the adult world. Some went to college, some joined the military, some went to work at Cummins, some went home to the farm and some got married and started families. The Class of 1964 has graduated and VHS is no more.

Great job at Country Squire
Dear Editor,

Mike Miller and Larry Greathouse are doing a great job out here in Country Squire Lakes.

Property tax questions
Dear Editor,

A question that has puzzled me for years is this:

What do our property taxes get spent on? I assumed the City of North Vernon's portion would go towards weekly trash pickup, but we are charged on our utility bill for that every month.

Breaking the silence
Is there value in silence? There must be when you hear that someone you formerly respected in the community supports those in power, those whose rancid names have become an anathema and bring shudders of fear and despair at their ineptness, crassness, and despicable behavior. You know to whom I refer. And smiling, but realizing that you no longer have anything in common with those who can justify that. Walking away in silence is still hard.
Staying silent within one's own family when they recite their flawed logic, is there value there?

President is true to form
President Trump is true to form once again. He said he would help the middle class. That's a lie. I know many people who had to pay out more income taxes, more than they never had to before. One of my relatives had to pay out $9,000 more and another relative $2,000 more in taxes than they did last year. Why? Because Trump took the deductions away with the tax law he pushed through Congress last year.

Great job, NVE 6th graders
Dear Editor,

I just attended the most entertaining and interesting elementary school program ever. North Vernon Elementary's sixth grade class, led by Ms. Kaitlin Harrell, the school's music teacher, put on a show to remember last week.

Editor's interpretation of Mueller report is all wrong
Dear Editor,

It seems that our esteemed editor has once again slipped into an alternate universe. (Re: "'Total exoneration' ... for the press," April 25.) His nearly comical editorial on the Mueller report and President Trump shows signs of TDS.

A most unhappy shopping trip
On Thursday, April 18, at around 11:30 a.m., I was shopping at the North Vernon Walmart for a bouquet of flowers.

In the checkout line were no less than 11 people with very full shopping carts waiting at the only cashier's spot open - the one by the cigarettes, which usually is the only one open.

Let's unite, not divide
Dear Editor,

I am completely turned off by the endless name calling that is so prevalent from all the people reported on in our major news shows.

The leaders and the most outspoken people of each party, especially the self-righteous ones running for president, are all a turnoff. They all sound like a school yard filled with young children pointing fingers and calling each other names. We hear a constant barrage of they are far right or left, fascists, communists and neo-Nazis; or less political comments like racist, non-Christian, gay or any other form of bigotry. Any comment positive or negative is turned into some radical political agenda. These attitudes do nothing to help but only create more anger and hate.

Remembering Charles Byron 'Chuck' Harmon
Dear Editor,

Charles Byron Harmon died at age 94 recently (March 19).

A few years ago Marty Pieratt, one of my outstanding tennis players at Jennings County High School, had written a book about Chuck Harmon entitled "The First Black Red." (Harmon played major league baseball for the Cincinnati Reds, St. Louis Cardinals and Philadelphia Phillies from 1954 to 1957.)

Exposing 'The Big Lie' from the Democratic left
Dear Editor,

I see much fake outrage and concern over racism in the op-eds of late. People actually hope and wish Republicans were racists. Sick hope.

I recommend the book "The Big Lie: Exposing The Nazi Roots of the American Left" by author Dinesh D'Souza. It is a No. 1 seller on the New York Times' best seller list.

We all can make more of a difference on Earth Day
Dear Editor,

Earth Day is Monday, April 22, marking a half century of promoting environmental awareneess and calling for protection of our planet.
But are we making a difference? Can we do more than reduce, reuse and recycle?

How will history view us?
Dear Editor,

I am not a history scholar though I do enjoy reading and learning from it in the context of today's world.

As I read this short article about Abraham Lincoln written by the Smithsonian for a radio program of the 1930s, my mind wandered.

Don't give up fighting for your Constitutional rights
Dear Editor,

Don't give up fighting. The time is on us again.
The Area Plan Commission is starting to be a big pain. They are poking in private affairs that does not concern them.

Store employees hassling shoppers is a sad trend
Dear Editor,

I don't think they're doing this at the North Vernon store, as "Jess Wundren" quipped (March 21) about how some of those big box stores are getting rid of employees who greet shoppers as they enter stores.

But stores have elsewhere, periodically, posted a yellow-vested employee to hassle shoppers as they exit, asking to check their receipt.
