The North Vernon mayoral race can only get more interesting from now until November. The two candidates, Mike Ochs on the Republican side and Matt Hurley of the Democratic Party, made their first major speeches of the campaign in the last couple of weeks. Dismal. There is no other word to describe the disturbingly low voter turnout in last week's North Vernon city primary election. Only 726, a paltry 15.1 percent, of the city's 4,816 registered voters made it to the polls or voted absentee.
When it comes to the true meat-and-potatoes issues, State Rep. Randy Frye (R-Greensburg) has again proved his merit. He often makes ill-conceived votes on controversial measures regarding social issues, but the three-term lawmaker, who represents the eastern half of Jennings County, can be spot-on when it comes to legislation of real importance to his district and state.
