Informing the electorate
One hot-button issue came into sharp focus during the North Vernon Political Forum last Wednesday at the Park Theatre Civic Centre. It's an issue that is only mildly controversial, so there weren't many "sparks" during this political "show." Nonetheless, the evening was an enlightening one for the North Vernon's voters.

Ugly time for America
It is almost as if President Trump is welcoming impeachment, and he has been for some time, encouraging and even daring Congress to take up the gauntlet.

School safety
Jennings County's schools are not immune from the threat of violence. We found that out in the last two weeks when police arrested three students, two at Jennings County High School and one at North Vernon Elementary School, for allegedly making threats that referenced school shootings.

A remarkable mayor
Following a hugely popular four-term mayor, Harold "Soup" Campbell had big shoes to fill. In the eyes of his constituency, Campbell filled those shoes quite well. North Vernon voters elected him twice by large margins to the city's highest office.

Campbell passed away Monday at the age of 72, leaving a hole in the heart of the city. Ever the public servant, he was in the midst of a campaign for a seat on the city council. Out of office for the last four years, he wanted to serve the people again.

Beautiful expansion
The ongoing expansion of Decatur Plastic Products has been wonderful for North Vernon and Jennings County in many ways.

The expansions are bringing in more jobs, of course, with up to 70 positions to be created. The construction of a new 50,000-square foot facility, now underway, also means more good jobs. And those jobs create a ripple effect through the community, such as more sales at local retailers and restaurants.

Protecting the integrity of Hoosier voters
from the South Bend Tribune

A federal appeals court ruling last week upheld the block on a controversial Indiana voter purge law.

The ruling does something else: It protects the integrity of the voting process for all Hoosiers.

From floods to drought
Water, water everywhere, but not a drop to drink. Well, not quite. But precautionary measures have wisely been taken in North Vernon.

The city was placed under mandatory water conservation requirements last week after North Vernon Water Department workers learned that the Brush Creek Reservoir water level had dropped eight feet due to a malfunctioning valve.

Essential service
It's an often thankless task but it's always an essential job.

Jennings County's 911 Emergency Dispatch Center is currently dealing most admirably with a severe staff shortage. Four of its dispatchers quit at nearly the same time last month, most to take jobs with higher pay and more normal hours.

School excitement
Where has the summer gone? In Jennings County, school started last week for students on Aug. 6. Teachers went back to work the day before. Principals returned to their jobs late last month.

Summer, as usual, flew past this year. The fact that classes began less than a full week into August and nearly a full month before Labor Day makes the summer seem shorter. So while the kids didn't get quite a full three months of down time from school, they came close.

Do something!
The time is long past for the president and Congress to do something about the endless mass shootings in America.

After a horrific weekend that saw two mass shootings within 13 hours that left 31 dead and dozens wounded, the urgency to tighten gun laws went beyond the boiling point - yet again.
