Sears sadness
For six decades, one retail location has more or less been the anchor store for downtown North Vernon.
The sad, sad news is that the Sears Hometown Store on East Walnut Street is closing next month. Even sadder, there is no replacement store on the horizon.

Diplomacy obviously has always been much better than military entanglements in solving international conflicts. That's why it was so encouraging to see the historic face-to-face talks underway between President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in Singapore this week, especially after all the dangerous rhetoric exchanged between the two previously.

A week full of fun
Next week's Jennings County Fair will be the earliest in recent history and perhaps the earliest ever. Only one other county fair in Indiana is being held as early as this one in 2018.

Just like brand new
Just in time for the 138th Jennings County Fair, the Community Building is open again after an extensive remodeling project. The building, which is the centerpiece of the fairgrounds, was formally dedicated with a ribbon cutting on Friday.

What public safety?
The Jennings County Council adopted the Local Option Income Tax, now called Local Income Tax (LIT), four years ago for two extremely important reasons.
With property tax rates capped by an amendment to the Indiana Constitution, the county simply needed more revenue to operate its government agencies and provide services to residents. By using LIT revenue, the county could take money from there instead of from its beleaguered general fund.
