Pay more now or pay much more later
Jails are expensive propositions, not just building them but then operating them.
That is why a so-called jail tax in Jennings County is a logical answer for funding a construction project that is likely to cost upwards of $20 million.

Primary choices
There will be a primary race for sheriff in Jennings County this year. There always is, it seems.
Last Friday was the deadline for candidates to file for the 2018 election, and until then the prospects of a contested sheriff's race for either party on May 8 was in doubt.
With the clock ticking, Joe Massie threw his hat into the ring to make a run for the Republican Party's nomination. Massie, who ran unsuccessfully for sheriff as an independent in 2014, is pitted against Kenny Freeman, who, in contrast, turned in his paperwork on the first hour on the first day, Jan. 10, that candidates could file.

An ounce of prevention
It's scary, actually more than scary. The current flu epidemic seems to get worse and worse every day.
Hundreds of people are dying with most of the victims being the young and elderly.

Positive dialogue
It makes sense for the city of North Vernon to assist with the project to build a new Jennings County Jail if the facility is going to be located within city limits.

Jails and taxes
It may have been a pipe dream all along to build a new Jennings County Jail without raising taxes.
Now comes the opinion of a financial consultant that the county's Local Income Tax revenue is "severely insufficient" to fund the project as county officials had fervently hoped.

Bipartisanship spirit
The Senate Democrats blinked, but in at least one way it was not a move that should make minority party members in both houses of Congress to hang their heads.
The 69-hour shutdown of the federal government ended with a refreshing display of bipartisanship not seen on Capitol Hill in years.

Dear Editor, This is in answer to William Sons' letter to the editor in which he called the elected president of our nation and his staff names. (Re: "Cruel and stupid people," Jan. 4.)
Cooperation between local governmental units is essential. That may be even more essential when it comes to Jennings County and North Vernon. These two bodies obviously need to have a strong partnership.

Let's make the most of earlier-than-usual fair
Last year was not perfect at the Jennings County Fair, but it was a significant improvement over previous recent years.

Unborn babies also suffer
Dear Editor,
This is in response to the letter to the editor (Dec. 21) about the Trump administration's ruling on "USDA organic" labels for meat.
You are really on your high horse about "organic" animals. Too bad the Democrats aren't that upset about babies being taken out of women's bodies by Planned Parenthood and parts being sold.

It's up to city, county to capitalize on bypass
After five years of construction costing $45 million, the U.S. 50 bypass is finally here.
With the eastern section of the new highway opening last week, the full 4.75-mile bypass has gone into use. This has enormous ramifications for North Vernon and Jennings County.
