OPINION February 26, 2015

Falling on deaf ears
Angry constituents vehemently voiced their disappointment a couple of weeks ago to the two members of the Indiana House of Representatives who represent Jennings County. The occasion was a public forum in North Vernon. It was one of the largest crowds to attend any of the regular sessions of the Jennings County Chamber of Commerce's annual Third House series.

Belated winter
Just when many in the Jennings County area thought we were going to escape the brunt of Old Man Winter this year - wham! - Mother Nature is dealing us a viciously cold and snowy blow this week. The result has been snow-covered roads, slide-offs and traffic accidents (thankfully mostly minor around here), closed schools, frozen water pipes, a big downturn in business for area retailers and other undesirable effects.

The art of compromise
Hallelujah. Two opposing political factions found a way to work together in a big way recently.

Pay attention, NV voters
The municipal election cycle has officially begun in North Vernon and voters in the city should pay close attention. They will have plenty of choices to make at the polls, first in May and then in November.

Recreational asset
With the development of campsites, Eco Lake Park in northern Geneva Township could bring in substantial revenue for the Jennings County Parks and Recreation Department. So say proponents of that plan.

Pravda on the Plains

Pay guidelines needed
It's crazy, to say the least, that Jennings County's elected officials are squabbling over what they are paid.

Memorial to a saint
What a great idea. The Park Theatre Civic Centre is planning to put up a lasting memorial to the late Hulda Reichenbach in front of the downtown landmark.

Gun sanity
The National Rifle Association and everyone else cannot deny the fact: gun deaths are increasing in America.

One of the recurring arguments by the NRA and its often-rabid supporters against any and all proposals for modest gun safety legislation is that if guns kill people, then automobiles do, too. Ergo, this nonsensical comparison is heard over and over: "If we outlaw guns, we should outlaw cars as well. More people die from car wrecks than from guns."

Goodbye to a hero
Few if any people have impacted a community during a lifetime as much as Harold McConnell did. He was figuratively a giant in North Vernon and Jennings County for so many years in so many ways.
