Memorial Day meaning
Memorial Day is more than backyard barbecues, picnics, car races and baseball.

That does not mean summer's first holiday should not be enjoyed with those and other leisurely pursuits. It's just that we should not lose sight of why we celebrate the last Monday in May.

Buckeye Street bucks
The pain will be palpable, not literally but figuratively and mentally, this summer for motorists and their passengers used to traveling on a busy thoroughfare in North Vernon. That's because Buckeye Street will unexpectedly have to be closed for up to three months.

More 'fireworks' needed
There were no fireworks in last week's city primary elections and very little drama, fueled mostly by more-than-usual voter apathy.

Who, though, could really blame North Vernon's voters? There was only one - count 'em - contested race in both primary elections, this one on the Democratic Party side. The Republican Party had none.

Fixing the problem
The Indiana legislature got at least one thing right during the 2019 session that just ended.

It passed a bill that will help counties like Jennings relieve some of their jail overcrowding that was, at least partially, caused by the state. Gov. Eric Holcomb signed the bill into law last week.

'Total exoneration' ... for the press
Special counsel Robert S. Mueller III's report released last Thursday clearly paints a sordid and damning picture of President Trump and his administration.

Tellingly, the president embraces the report one moment, praising it for giving him "total exoneration," then in the next moment smashes it as being "total bull--." It can't be both.

Improving safety
Spring is the rainy season in Jennings County, but heavy rains can and do hit in any season in this area.

That means roadways that can be flooded and impassable, leading to water rescues - often many water rescues. While most of these are in the Weston Bottoms area in southern Spencer and western Lovett townships, many other spots in the county are prone to roadway flooding.

Let the public see Mueller's full report
From the (Terre Haute) Tribune Star

Attorney General William Barr declared a week and a half ago in a memo that special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation did "not establish that the President was involved" in any crime related to the Russian government's interference in the 2016 presidential election.

True rehab
The Jennings County Council made a bold, smart move last week in voting to commit substantial funds to a work release center in partnership with Jackson County and the City of Seymour.

Give us full disclosure
A cloud that has hovered over the Trump Administration has at least partially been lifted with the conclusion of special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation.

Now maybe, maybe, we can concentrate on the important issues.

Vernon's example
For far too long, City of North Vernon officials have dragged their feet on curbside recycling. Residents in Jennings County's only city are still waiting.

Proposals to start curbside recycling in North Vernon have been talked about for years, but it's been all talk and no action. The arguments against the move involve the usual suspects: money and expense. Critics contend a curbside recycling program would simply cost too much. Residents would bear the expense, of course, just as they do now for curbside trash collection, either through fees added to their water-sewer bills or via taxes. That expense, some say, would just be too much of a burden for the people of North Vernon to bear.
