Time will tell
It's official. The jail tax is going away.

That is old news since the Jennings County Council showed clear signs indicating that it was going to rescind the controversial tax since last January - and even before that. The four rookies on the council - Mandy Creech, Bob Ellis, Mike Gerth and Charlie Weber - campaigned last year on the issue of abolishing the tax and all on Election Night 2018 said they would follow through on that promise.

Choices for NV voters
North Vernon voters will have many important decisions to make next Tuesday. They will choose whether to keep the current mayor or elect a new one. Voters will also have choices on three of the five city council positions involving whether to reinstate incumbents or go with the challengers. Two of the council incumbents as well as the clerk-treasurer face no opposition, but that doesn't mean the Nov. 5 city election is not important.

Overloaded judiciary
There can be little doubt that the case load in Jennings County's two courts is way too high. Or, as Circuit Court Judge Jon Webster calls it, the crush on the dockets of both his and the Superior Court is "off the charts."

Rescission decision
It is not official yet, but it might as well be.

Jennings County residents have been paying a jail tax based on their income since Jan. 1. That tax will surely end Dec. 31.

Informing the electorate
One hot-button issue came into sharp focus during the North Vernon Political Forum last Wednesday at the Park Theatre Civic Centre. It's an issue that is only mildly controversial, so there weren't many "sparks" during this political "show." Nonetheless, the evening was an enlightening one for the North Vernon's voters.

School safety
Jennings County's schools are not immune from the threat of violence. We found that out in the last two weeks when police arrested three students, two at Jennings County High School and one at North Vernon Elementary School, for allegedly making threats that referenced school shootings.
