Clean safe living
Progress continues to be made at Country Squire Lakes, maybe not as fast as some people who live there want but improvements are happening nonetheless.

This month, property owners received a reduction in the annual dues and assessments. That fee, assessed by lot, dropped from $365 to $325. The reduction may not seem like much, but who wouldn't take an 11 percent cut in a bill?

A matter of public safety
An old, uninsulated, leaky block building makes for a poor firehouse. Yet for over 56 years, the underfunded Campbell Township Volunteer Fire Department somehow had to make do with that.

Finally after a mighty and prolonged struggle, the department has a new home. It is so bare bones that it doesn't even have a sign outside noting it is a fire station, but nonetheless it is an efficient, warm and dry firehouse, much more suitable to the fire department's vitally important mission than the old firehouse.

Grading the schools
The letter grades given annually to Indiana's schools by the state may be silly and not exactly revealing - and far from a true report card.
Still, it was encouraging to see those grades go up for nearly all of the schools in Jennings County.

Welcome leadership
Give U.S. Sen. Todd Young (R-Ind.) credit. A staunch conservative who supports many of President Trump's policies, Young has not been afraid to buck the president and his administration for coddling Saudi Arabia despite the kingdom's complicity in the horrific humanitarian crisis in Yemen.

The freshman senator, who will become Indiana's senior senator in a couple of weeks, has been front and center in a bipartisan effort to force Saudi Arabia to end its U.S.-backed bombing campaign in Yemen's civil war.

A president's legacy
The legacy of President George H.W. Bush keeps growing since he was commander-in-chief. The tributes are flowing following the 41st president's death last Friday at the age of 94, and rightly so.

The Republican served only one term in the White House but his record during that short time is noteworthy. His leadership during the fall of the Iron Curtain and the collapse of the Soviet Union was measured and steady, the perfect response. He also responded appropriately to Saddam Hussein-led Iraq's invasion of Kuwait, unleashing Desert Storm to great effect without overdoing it and destabilizing that volatile region.

Give the kids the best
Ever since Jennings County High School opened 50 years ago, its wrestling team has been operating in less than ideal circumstances.

Despite that, the Panthers' wrestling program has been exemplary - first under Coach Jim Harr and then his successor, Coach Howard Jones. The program has produced successful teams and individuals who have not only excelled on the mat but also in life, in no small part due to their background in the sport.

Jail conundrum
It is frustrating, the money being paid out for the Jennings County Jail project when the proposal has yet to be given the total go-ahead by county officials.

The county has already doled out around $150,000 in consultant fees, real estate appraisal bills and other related costs that are all part of the preliminary planning. That includes $20,000 in lobbying fees for state legislation to give the Jennings County Council authority to enact a special-use income tax to fund the project.

Do the right thing, AG
Some Democrats in the Indiana legislature are planning to introduce impeachment proceedings against Republican Attorney General Curtis Hill. The move will most likely fail, but at least some will be standing up for principle.
