To make progress, we need politics
Every so often, I jot down a list of the things that discourage me about our country. There's the widespread disregard for our core values of tolerance and mutual respect, for instance.
Our declining national optimism. Our relaxed attitude toward fixing our election machinery, overseeing financial institutions, and making sure that our key democratic institutions and processes are working effectively. There's wage stagnation, income inequality, a high poverty rate, failing infrastructure, inadequate health-care coverage, a dysfunctional Congress.... You get the idea.

Specious.
There's a word that doesn't often pop up in everyday conversation.
It's used to describe something that is superficially plausible but actually wrong.
And it's the word that immediately came to mind when President Donald Trump's legal team trotted out its remarkable argument that the guy in the White House - because he is in the White House - is essentially above the laws of the land.

Healthy habits vs. childhood obesity
Many Hoosiers are heavy. Indiana has one of the nation's highest rates of adult obesity, ranking 40th.
A significant share of our children are also overweight or obese. Indiana's rate of overweight and obese children is higher than that of all of our neighbor states. According to the latest research, one in three of our state's children ages 10 to 17 are overweight, with kids of color and those living in low-income households at the greatest risk of being so.
