Fine arts are no understudy for COVID-19
COVID-19 is threatening the very important, and oldest, form of expression of human culture and society: the arts. Though the global detriment caused by the pandemic is fantastic fodder for traditional art, such as painting and sculpting, the physical arts- dance, theater and choir- which all culminate in the billion dollar industry that is Broadway and stage production, are in peril due to the difficulty of maintaining COVID-safe protocols during rehearsals and performances.

Jennings GOP in celebratory mood even before Election Day
It was like Christmas in October at the 2020 Lincoln/Reagan Day Dinner Thursday night: the social camaraderie mixed with the cozy yet grand ambiance provided by Willow Lake Event Center's The Barn-and the Republican red table cloths-certainly put one in a celebratory mood.

And the Jennings County Republican Party definitely had something to celebrate, with a Republican candidate vying for a position in every county office for the 2020 General Election, some of whom are uncontested, in addition to state officials Congressman Greg Pence, Senator Chip Perfect, and State Representatives Jim Lucas and Randy Frye, who were all in attendance at the event.

United Way campaign virtual
In times like this' we all need our annual United Way campaign to be successful.

Yes, even though we are faced with social distancing thanks to COVID, the 2021 United Way campaign is adapting its strategies, hoping to make its goal of $150,000.

President Caleb Reynolds invites your participation and explains how he became involved after he moved here to minister at the Nazarene Church four years ago.

"When I started to learn about the organizations in town offering assistance, I saw the common thread was their connection to the United Way. The most essential helping services all received funding from this organization. It made an important connection for me and the church."
North Vernon Police Chief James Webster knows exactly what this pastor means. His department recently concluded their annual campaign, which is made up of "Evergreen" participants, which is someone who has allowed their participation to stand year after year without signing a pledge card every 12 months.

Stream Cliff 'sister' restaurant opening in NV
"A rose by any other name would smell as sweet," which means the new sister restaurant to the beloved Stream Cliff Farm is sure to provide quality service and fantastic food. The best part? It will be open 12 months a year.

The new restaurant is called Crimson Oak Restaurant & Pub and will be located at 51 N Madison Ave in North Vernon, formerly the location of the White Front Cafe. It is owned by Troy and Elizabeth Riley who purchased the building from Steve Gasper. Elizabeth's parents own Stream Cliff, which has been in business for 47 years, and where she has helped run the restaurant and winery for many of those years.
So why open another restaurant when you already manage such a successful business?

Voting setting new records
Jennings County is no different.

Just like news reports across the nation signaling historic voter interest, Jennings County election officials are seeing the same kind of response as local voters set new standards for expressing their opinions where it counts - the ballot box.

"I might be wrong...but I estimate we'll have up and above 55 to 60 percent turnout," says JC Clerk Amy Thompson. That compares to a comparable 40 percent turnout in past presidential races.

As of Tuesday noon, 430 registered voters have traveled to the Vernon courthouse to cast their ballots in person since walk-in voting started Oct. 6. Compare that figure with the 77 who walked in the same number of days since walk-ins started back in 2016.

Absentee ballot requests are also surpassing the 2016 total to date.
