Under heavy guard, murder defendant Alan Joseph Marantos was transported to the Vernon Courthouse Friday morning for the first of what will surely be numerous appearances.

"It's a big case," said a member of the eight-man JC Sheriff contingent that escorted the 34-year-old Seymour resident into Circuit Court.

Judge Jon Webster began the hearing by making sure all family members of victim Brian Kirby wishing to attend were seated in the courtroom. The following charges were then read, along with state guidelines for penalties:

1. Murder: 45 to 65 years.

2. Robbery Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury, an F2: 10 to 30 years.

3. Aggravated Battery, an F3: 3 to 16 years.

4. Obstruction of Justice: 6 months to 2.5 years and up to a $10,000 fine.

5. Abuse of a corpse, F6: 6 months to 2.5 years.

6. Possession of Meth, F6: 6 months to 2.5 years.

7. Intimidation, an A Misdemeanor: up to one year.

8. Resisting Law Enforcement, an A Misdemeanor: up to one year.

9. Leaving Scene of an Accident, a B Misdemeanor: up to 180 days in jail

Upon questioning, Marantos said he is married, has no children, and cannot afford an attorney. He has lost his temporary job at Riteway and has no income; owns no real estate; has no checking or savings account; and has not received a stimulus check.

As such, the judge appointed local attorney Brad Kage to lead the defense and attorney and Matt Bates of Madison to assist.

The hearing lasted about 10 minutes, after which Marantos was returned to the JC Jail where he was placed in quarantine for two weeks. He is expected to be housed here, as the most serious charge determines which jail a defendant stays when charged in more than one jurisdiction.

Marantos was previously incarcerated in Jackson County, where he was charged April 2 with Robbery Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury, an F2. That filing resulted in his bond being revoked in another Jackson County case filed Feb. 7, 2020 on two charges of theft, both F6s.
