7/20/2011 7:33:00 AM Senator Nugent now on a military base council
Indiana Senate President Pro Tem David Long (R-Fort Wayne) appointed State Sen. Johnny Nugent (R-Lawrenceburg) to the Military Base Planning Council on Monday, July 11.
Nugent said this council will examine Indiana's defense assets as well as current security contracts and technologies.
During summer and fall months when the legislature is not in session full-time, lawmakers utilize bipartisan interim study committees and commissions to conduct in-depth research into complicated issues facing Hoosiers. Often their work results in solutions and legislation that might otherwise go unaccomplished during the fast pace of the winter- and springtime legislative session, Long said.
"As a U.S. Army veteran, Senator Johnny Nugent has utilized his service knowledge on a variety of Senate panels throughout the years," Long said. "Legislative leaders look forward to his input as he again dedicates time to crafting bipartisan recommendations for the benefit of our state's armed forces."
Nugent said he will closely watch developments of other key study committees, review recommendations and seek public input before the Indiana General Assembly reconvenes in January of 2012, including:
Commission on Military and Veterans Affairs: Will review whether to give price preferences to veteran-owned businesses and assess the needs of returning Hoosier veterans to ensure the state is doing all it can to meet those needs.
Criminal Law and Sentencing Policy Study Committee: Will study the long-range needs of Indiana's criminal justice and correction systems, examine critical problems and make recommendations for policy priorities that will improve effectiveness and make more efficient use of state dollars. Lawmakers will also examine criminal laws related to marijuana, "truth in sentencing" and home detention programs.
Interim Study Committee on Economic Development: Will examine issues related to improving Indiana's economic climate and tax system as well as the use and effectiveness of tax credits and deductions. The committee will also study the extent to which Indiana's education system supports economic development More information about committee topics, schedules and agendas is available online at www.in.gov/legislative/interim.
Nugent is in his ninth term as a state senator for District 43, which includes seven townships in Jennings County.
