Covid Update: deaths increase
The Indiana State Department of Health says the number of confirmed cases in Jennings as of Wednesday morning was 176, 7 more than last week. Deaths are now 12, up 2 from last week.

Jennings County Health Department announced Friday that over the past 10 days, there have been five new deaths related to the novel coronavirus. All were adults from Jennings County.

Gov. Holcomb holds briefing
On Monday, April 27 at 2:30 pm, Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb hosted a virtual press conference to update Hoosiers on the COVID-19 pandemic.

Regarding the stay-at-home order, the May 1 date has not been extended. Any updates on this will be updated on the plaindealer-sun.com website.

Joining the Governor was Daniel Rusyniak, Chief Medical Officer for the Family & Social Services (FSSA), who relayed some updated figures regarding new coronavirus cases. There are 963 new cases across the entire state of Indiana. Seventy-two of these are here in Jennings County. As of Monday, 31 additional deaths have been reported. The total amount of tests distributed statewide are up to 84,476.

County suffers first death
Jennings County has suffered its first death from the novel coronavirus.
According to a release from the Jennings County Health Department on Friday, April 17, the death occurred Thursday, April 16. Citing privacy laws, the department did not release any other information.

Through various sources, the individual was determined to be a male in his 70's who lived in Vernon. He had been hospitalized at Columbus Regional Hospital on Monday.

Jennings County Public Health Officer Dr. Gregory Heumann had no comment except to send his prayers to the patient's family and friends during their time of loss.

The health department reminds the public the best way to protect yourself against this pandemic is to wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds; avoid touching your face with unwashed hands; avoid close contact with people who are sick; stay home when you are sick; cover your cough or sneeze; clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces; and maintain social distancing.
