The country has reached an important milestone in the 2020 Census. Half of all of the households in the U.S. have responded -that's nearly 74 million responses!
It just goes to show that it has never been easier to respond to the census on your own, whether online at 2020census.gov, over the phone, or by mail.
Here in Indiana, 53.6 percent of the population has answered the census, with about two-thirds of the 92 counties over 50 percent.
In 11 counties, 63 to 68 percent have responded to the census questions as of this week. However, Jennings is not among this rank; in
fact, the county is a bit below the average.
The Census reports 49.5 of local residents have answered the questionnaire to date. Of that amount, 32.7 percent used the internet. This year is the first time the internet has been utilized by the Census.
In the last census ten years ago, 68.8 percent of local residents responded to the questionnaire.
Of its neighbors, only Scott County has a lower percentage at this time, with 48 percent answering the census as of this week.
Why should you care?
The results of the 2020 Census helps determine how federal money flows into communities. Results influence highway planning and construction; determines how much money is allocated for the Head Start program and grants that support teachers and special ed.
The information guides federal assistance in restoring wildlife, preventing child abuse and to provide housing assistance to older adults.
