Plans remain same for May 5 primary
The Jennings County Election Office is still planning for the May 5 primary election to go on as scheduled.

So is the entire state of Indiana despite the postponements of primaries in other states, including Ohio on Tuesday, because of the coronavirus crisis.

"We will continue to follow any mandates the Secretary of State, Connie Lawson, sets in place," said Amy Thompson, county clerk. "I am certain the Secretary of State's Election Division will provide an efficient plan for our election if any changes become necessary."

Indiana's primary election is over six weeks away while absentee-in-person voting will begin in less than three weeks - on Tuesday, April 7. Thompson says she and her staff are ready.

"We have already prepared for a larger than average absentee voting turnout," she noted. "We have additional supplies and workers in place for the absentee process."

Registered voters can vote absentee-in- person or by absentee-by-mail.

"Absentee walk-in voting will open as planned on April 7," Thompson said. "This allows any voter in the county to vote at their convenience from Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Election Office."

Absentee-in-person voting will also be held on Saturday, April 25, and Saturday, May 2, and will end at noon Monday, May 4.

The election office is located in the Jennings County Courthouse in Vernon.

The process for mailing in absentee ballots for the primary involves applying for either a Republican Party or a Democratic Party ballot, either in person, by mail, fax or email, then marking the ballot and returning it via mail to the Election Office. Applications must be received by Thursday, April 23.

Primary Election Day is Tuesday, May 5, where polls will be open 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Steps will be taken to keep each site in the county safe, Thompson noted.

"We had been proactive in our last city election (in 2019) in providing germ sanitizer to each election inspector at each voting site," she said. "We still have those on hand and will have additional sanitizer wipes for each voting site as well."

Voter registration for the primary election ends at 4 p.m. Monday, April 6.

Voter registration will then reopen May 19 and end Oct. 5. The general election will be on Tuesday, Nov. 3.
