Indiana's Assessor of the Year
Jennings County Assessor Linda Kovacich has received a singular honor. She was voted the Assessor of the Year by her peer group, the Indiana County Assessors Association.
The local official received the honor at the organization's annual convention Aug. 26-29 in Indianapolis. The tribute is a testimony to her leadership, her exemplary example to others and her willingness to assist her peers, especially ones with less experience.
You could also add humility to that description, as it was a family member who informed this newspaper about this award.
The assessor is responsible for all property assessments in the county, both business and personal real estate, and for non-taxable exemptions. The information lays the basis for the county's property taxes.

Campaign 2014: Mike Claytor wants to balance the books
Mike Claytor hopes to be the first Certified Public Accountant to be elected auditor for the state of Indiana. His goal is "to return financial accountability to Indiana government."
This Democrat is asking for support so "Together, we can balance the books and balance the power."
The fact that no CPA has ever headed up this office surprises voters who hear this fact for the first time. Out of about 50 employees in the auditor's office, there is currently just one who holds an advanced accounting degree.

Dispelling myths to prevent suicide
The recent tragic death of Robin Williams has brought the issue of suicide to our nation's forefront once again. This loss of this man who brought joy and laughter to so many was shocking and a heartbreaking reminder of just how indiscriminate suicide can be.
While it can be easy to think of suicide as something that always happens in someone else's family and someone else's community, statistics show that it is a problem that impacts us all. Men and women of all ages and all races in every socioeconomic circle take their own lives every day. Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the U.S. Our nation's veterans account for nearly 20 percent of the more than 100 completed suicides that occur each day. For every person who kills themselves, there are another 25 who make an attempt to do so.
