Backpack giveaway at local Cellular Connection is Aug. 2
Residents in North Vernon are about to benefit from a national backpack giveaway campaign. The Cellular Connection, the largest Verizon Premium Wireless Retailer in the U.S., in a joint effort with its customers, announces that it will be donating 100,000 backpacks full of school supplies to children through its School Rocks Backpack Giveaway. Last year, the company donated 60,000 backpacks.

Babies provide cute factor at Jennings Co. Fair
It was a bittersweet evening on Wednesday at the Jennings County Fair as the end of an era came to a close.
The Modern Ms. Club has sponsored the annual pageant more years than can be remembered. But this year's pageant was their last as they prepare to pass the reins. The group said the amount of work required and fewer members are the reasons they opted out of sponsoring the pageant. No word yet on who will be taking over the event net year.

What better way to spend 50th year of marriage than on bicycle built for two?
On a warm summer morning, Phil and Carol Ann Pattengale pedaled through Jennings on a bicycle built for two.
The couple from Sturgis, Mich., were celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary in a most unusual way. They are taking a four-week bicycling expedition on the tandem bike via a circuitous route. Starting at their home, they went to Portage, Mich., to South Bend (to visit a son), to Kouts and Rochester, Ind., through North Vernon to Madison and LaGrange, Ky. (to visit a daughter), to Cincinnati and then Cleveland (to visit another son).

Good News for All of Us Jennings moving in right direction
The latest reports are out and in the area of adult smoking great strides are being made.
Jennings County has dropped the adult smoking rate from 37 percent in 2013 to 33 percent in 2014, according to the Robert Wood Johnson and University of Wisconsin Population Institute report.
For Indiana, it was announced at the Indiana Tobacco Control Partner Information X-Change held recently in Indianapolis that 21 percent of Hoosier adults use tobacco products, which is down from 25 percent in 2011.
