Annual Turkey Giveaway - Lucky winners are announced
Winners of the annual Plain Dealer & Sun Turkey GiveAway were chosen Friday by participating businesses here in North Vernon and by 5 p.m. many of the certificates for the free turkeys had been picked up at the newspaper office by appreciative residents.

Vets can get help with education costs
With the recent Veterans Day, the Indiana Commission for Higher Education wants Hoosier veterans to know there are resources to help them plan, prepare, and pay for college.
Data from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs show the number of Indiana military veterans using educational benefits has more than doubled in five years-from 7,809 veterans in 2010 to 16,075 veterans in 2013.
Despite growth, there is much room for improvement. Indiana's Gulf War veterans alone total more than 139,000 men and women.

Young Women Step Out in Support of Others
The annual Our Hospice of Jennings County Mardi Gras themed gala benefit is scheduled for Saturday, February 6, 2016, at St. Mary's Church (Klingner Hall), 212 Washington Street, North Vernon.

The evening will begin at 6 p.m. with a social hour, silent auction and cash bar. Also included in the evening's events are dinner, entertainment and a live auction. Tickets are $35 per person. For tickets call Our Hospice of Jennings County at 812-346-5944.

Veterans go into business and purchase the unique Fizz Wizz
Jeremy and Raechelle Fletcher met while she was a US Navy nurse and he was her patient after being injured while serving with the US Army. The two married and decided to move to Jeremy's hometown.
After returning to North Vernon, the two looked around for business opportunities and decided to purchase Fizz Wizz. They renamed it Fletcher's Fizz Wizz and on Oct. 6 opened their doors for business.
"We stopped in here and they said they were going to close and we really liked it," explained Raechelle, who served in the Navy for eight years. "We really wanted to keep it open so we bought it."
