Struggle to find enough pollworkers leads to various suggestions on motivating volunteers
What if you went to vote next week, but there was no one at the polls to give you a ballot?
That is the prospect the Jennings County Election Board (EB) was facing last week as they were told the Republican Party still had 26 unfilled slots for pollworkers. Because the GOP names the inspectors for this year's election, they needed to find 75 poll workers.
Local Democrats were in better shape filling their 50 spots, said chairperson Karen Snyder. She assured the EB she had the volunteers. However, election deputy Brenda King said the Demos still had a few blanks to fill as well. Also, neither party had given her names of 5 subs who could be called at the last minute to fill a position.
By law, the party chairs were supposed to provide names of their poll workers to the Election Office about a month ago.

JC Sheriff Gary Driver set the pace for the evening by introducing local candidates.
It's a great wicket," he told the enthusiastic crowd. Driver says he goes to quite a few county meetings but when he leaves the "County Council or Commissioners' meetings, I'm scratching' my head. We're not getting our bang for our buck. It's not working the way things should."
