The coronavirus threat may have caused Jennings County Schools to be closed until May 1, but it did not stop a slew of volunteers from preparing and then distributing 34,000 meals for the county's children last week.

The meals were given out at all schools, concluding at 6 p.m. at Jennings County High School. Youths 18 and under were eligible to receive the brown paper bagful of food that holds five breakfasts and five lunches.

According to Patty Vanosdol, chief cook at Sand Creek Elementary School, the breakfasts consist of a variety of cereals, muffins, granola bar, Pop Tart, fruit and juice.

Lunches are chips, crackers, and a "fruit bag and a grain bag." Protein is provided via peanut butter and cheese sticks.

Newly appointed Sand Creek Elementary School Principal Susie Webster and her new assistant principal Karen Pedigo were right in the thick of things, starting with the line of cars arriving for the 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. distribution. Demand was swift. In the first half hour, over 250 bags were passed out.

"This school has always been great for my kids," said Shelia Roggenkamp from the driver's seat as she was handed "Backsacks" for her two sons. "The school has been so helpful!"

Another dad, Bryan Dowell, totally agreed, describing the "Backsack" program as "a great idea."

This week is spring break, so there will not be a distribution on Thursday.

Hopefully, on the following week, on Thurs-day, April 2, there will be enough volunteers to get the thousands of meals prepared and given out.

JCSC Superintendent Teresa Brown "will try everything she can" to gather enough volunteers so the "Backsack" program can continue while school is closed, said Debbie Andis, the superintendent's assistant.
