Stellar crossing puts railroad, city at odds; annexation takes first step to being reality
A final agreement between the Madison Railroad and the City of North Vernon on the Madison Avenue Stellar work is now in the hands of attorneys. At the last City Council meeting, Cathy Hale, director of the Madison Port Authority, told the Council they should talk only to her board's attorney about resolving the issue of sidewalks to Walmart.
Now, the Council has directed their attorney to follow this direction to resolve a nagging Stellar issue which threatens to delay and, in the worst scenario, topple the project which would upgrade Madison Avenue, its intersection with East O&M Ave. and the one-block length of Fifth Street between the CSX track and the Stellar Plaza.

The North Vernon City Council voted unanimously to continue their northward expansion at a special called meeting on the issue Monday night, June 9.

Council divided on hiring of new police officer
The question of reducing the number of police officers in the City of North Vernon was put to a vote at the City Council meeting Wednesday night.
By a vote of 3-2 the Council voted to keep their police department at its present level, the first time such a question was ever put to a vote, at least in recent years.
The issue arose when Police Chief James Webster announced that officer Justin Black, a three-year veteran of the department, had resigned and was taking a position with the Columbus police department where he would immediately receive a $13,000 raise.

Annexation study will be on agenda for next CC meeting
The North Vernon Annexation Committee will meet at 6 p.m. Wednesday, May 28 to discuss the final study recently completed on the issue. The Council is also expected to discuss annexation at their 7 p.m. meeting that evening.
The studies are available at the office of the Clerk-Treasurer at the Carnegie Government Center.
The city is considering bringing two areas into its fold.

Council to implement new fees for vacant or abandoned properties
It may soon be more expensive to own properties that are vacant or abandoned here in North Vernon.
Next Wednesday night, May 28, the City Council may vote on an ordinance whereby all properties would be subject to garbage, hydrant and storm water fees, regardless of whether there is anyone home at the address or not.
The city's Utilities Service Board (USB) has been discussing this issue for some time and has "looked at several options on recouping money for both residential and commercial vacant properties," said Mike Hess, water superintendent.

NVPD stepping up enforcement of seat belt law for the holiday
The North Vernon Police Department wants to remind motorists to Click It or Ticket. In order to enforce this reminder, the NVPD began stepping up enforcement on Friday,May 9.
The efforts are part of a larger, national Click It or Ticket mobilization that runs through June 1. As motorists take to the roads to celebrate the long Memorial Day weekend, law enforcement officials across the nation will be ensuring that everyone buckles up.

Newspaper office nails a ribbon cutting to commemorate kick-off of facade program
A ceremony involving the signing of a 2-by-4 board and the hammering of nails into the wood Friday afternoon, May 2 in front of the Plain Dealer & Sun building on East O&M Avenue marked the start of yet another Stellar Community program-the Downtown Facade Project in North Vernon.
The newspaper building's facade is the first in the project to be tackled by Bradshaw Building Specialties. The North Vernon firm was awarded the work after it submitted the lowest bid of five companies earlier this year. Bradshaw employees and its subcontractors began the work the following Monday morning.
