Policemen recognized for saving a life
Three different levels of awards were presented to four heroic officers at the City Council meeting Monday night.
North Vernon Chief of Police James Webster made the awards involving the Sept. 17, 2014 fire that engulfed a Crestwood Drive home and almost killed occupant Andrew W. Hatchett, 39.
NVPD Officer Andrew Richmond arrived on the scene and acted to pull the semiconscious man out of the engulfed home.
"I knew I couldn't just wait for this man to die. I would never forgive myself if I did and later found out that he had passed away while we waited," Richmond said in a 2014 North Vernon Sun article.

Quarry project vetted for several years with all indications a 'Go!'
The resolution to fund several projects-including a new source of water for North Vernon-with a $6 million bond was passed at the last City Council meeting.
But not with a unanimous vote.
Councilor Mike Ochs moved to table the motion for the bond because he wants "more investigation" before the city goes ahead with plans to store water from the Muscatatuck River in the 60-acre quarry currently owned by Hanson Quarry.
Ochs gave as reason for his tredipation that he had heard the old Arvin's "might have dumped toxins" at the quarry.
Mayor Harold Campbell and several councilors explained that the quarry alternative has been discussed and looked into for some time now. Officials want a more consistent, cleaner and safer water supply for its residents and customers than what is currently offered from the Muscatatuck River.
