Reservoir bids in the ballpark with local company expected to get job
Bids for North Vernon's new reservoir were opened at the Utility Service Board Monday night to the relief of at least one key person-engineer Richard Morin.

"I feel pretty good," he said Tuesday afternoon. "Bids came in reasonably where we expected."

While the lowest bid was more than the engineer's estimate of $295,000, it came in below the construction budget of $3.5 million. Two of the bids were a scant $11,693 apart, which Morin said was a good sign "that they (the bidders) understand the project."

Bidding on the work were:

C & H/M Excavating, Inc. out of Milan: $4,004,426;

Dave O'Mara Contractor, Inc, North Vernon: $3,376,573;

Layne Heavy Civil, Inc., Orleans: $4,569,281; and

Mitchell & Stark Construction Co., Medora: $3,388,266.

The Utilities Service Board scheduled a special meeting Wednesday, July 20 at 6 p.m. to award the bid. Since O'Mara was the lowest bidder, it is expected the local company will get the work. Ironically, its closest competitor, Mitchell & Stark, was awarded the $4.26 million job at the wastewater plant last year which O'Mara also bid on.

Construction progressing, but not fast enough for Greensburg St. to reopen
Originally, the goal was to re-open Greensburg Street in time for school buses to start rolling through in time for the start of school on Aug. 2.
Now, though, that is not possible, reports North Vernon Wastewater Superintendent Russell Vaught. Work at the plant is continuing and while progressing nicely, it is not to the point where traffic will be able to get through.

New diamond not flashy but will allow for heavier cargo, less noise
Those traveling downtown last week were drawn to a busy corner at the Madison Avenue and East O&M intersections.
It was there that a crew from CSX Railroad of about 20 men "from all over" labored for a week to replace a section of track where the Madison Railroad and the CSX rails cross, forming what is known in that transportation parlance as "a diamond."
A new diamond was needed as CSX plans to increase the number of trains going through North Vernon. One report had the increase from 5 to 10 trains a day; another thought it would be 20.
