NVPD wants to up your safety on St. Patrick's Day
The North Vernon Police Department will be conducting Operation Pull Over-funded traffic safety patrols through March 31.
Patrol officers will be working in all parts of North Vernon with the primary focus of enforcing seat belt and child restraint laws while also strictly enforcing all other traffic laws throughout the city.

Fire zone assessments ready in 2 weeks; city moves to reconcile feud with Madison RR
First it was decorated for Christmas.

Before long, it will be decorated for spring.

But hopes are high that before another painting project is organized, the plywood fencing along the Fifth Street devastated area will be long gone.

Project manager Ardell Mitchell told the City Council Monday night, March 9 that he continues to pursue "property acquisition" and that appraisals for the buildings in the fire zone should be completed within two weeks.

Mike Piirto leaves lasting mark on NVPD
He is gone now from the North Vernon Police Department, but if the testaments forthcoming at Mike Piirto's retirement party is any indication, he will not be forgotten for years to come. If ever.
Just about everyone from the department, plus family, friends, other law enforcement pals and associates from Piirto's new career with JC Schools attended the retirement party for the 24-year veteran Friday night at at the city's Education Training Center.
Looking around the room, Mayor Harold Campbell noted one of the honors of serving the people as a police officer is the reward of gaining the respect and heartfelt thanks of the public for a job well done.
Piirto began his career at the NVPD on July 15, 1991. Police Chief James Webster recalled how he was paired up with the one-year veteran when he started on the force. Not only did he learn a lot from this officer, but there were plenty of laughs to counterbalance the often harsh realities of police work.
