GOP hopefuls in showdown
Voter interest is higher than normal for Tuesday's Republican Party primary election in Jennings County.

"When you have that many contested races, it brings out the voters for a primary," said Jennings County Clerk Mary Kilgore. "I'm expecting a big turnout for the Republican primary."

The GOP has nine contested races on the ballot in most of Jennings County with five of them involving county offices. In contrast, on the Democratic side there are only two races with more than one candidate - and both of those are at the federal level.

Counting the three Jennings County at-large seats, six Republican incumbents are being challenged by others of their same party. Dave Turner, the county's GOP chair, dismisses the notion that the high number suggests party infighting or discord. Rather, he says, the abundance of candidates is a sign of the party's strength.

IRS refunds county $96,000
When others told her she was wasting her time, Janice Ramey appealed to the Internal Revenue Service anyway.

As a result, a $90,000 mistake has been fixed.

"I am so relieved," said Ramey, the current Jennings County recorder who was then auditor. "I can't apologize enough to the taxpayers. But I don't apologize to the county council and commissioners. They didn't let me know what was going on (until they announced it)."

The IRS refunded the $90,000 in penalties, along with $6,000 in interest, to Jennings County earlier this month. The penalties were the result of the Jennings County Auditor's office for not paying $452,388.94 in payroll taxes owed to the IRS in 2014. The county paid those taxes in early 2015, shortly after Kay Vance took office as county auditor and discovered the oversight. Then last September, the auditor's office paid the $90,000 from the county's general fund to the IRS in order to avoid additional penalties, according to county officials.

Jennings Chamber disbands
It was not a surprising move, but it was still a shock to many.

The Jennings County Chamber of Commerce will soon be no more.

The Chamber's Board of Directors decided to disband the 61-year-old organization on Monday after accepting the resignation of Chamber Director Marie Shepherd.

The reason is simple: declining membership and lack of revenue.

"It was with much emotion and sadness that the board discussed and voted on the dissolution," Shepherd said. "Every effort has been made to continue operating in the best interest of our members. Due to the financial hardship, we can no longer offer the support and provide a needed service to this community. It is time to close our doors."

The Chamber's officers are Brenda Habenicht, president; Dr. Terry Sargent, vice president; Lindy Hensley, treasurer, and Rita Euers, secretary. Other board members are Dr. Adam Davis, Claudia Huelson, Ralph Miller and Tom Means.

Like many other businesspeople, realtor Larry Sporleder of Tom Lawson & Associates, a longtime Chamber member, is saddened by the development.

"I hate to see the Chamber close," he said. "It's one more thing leaving town."

Police: Woman's death 'suspicious'
Police are investigating the death of a North Vernon woman after her body was found Saturday afternoon in a lake near Country Meadows. The lake is located in the 1900 block of East CR 100S in Vernon Township.
Authorities identified the victim as Jama Brown, 49.
An autopsy was scheduled to be performed Monday morning, according to Sgt. Stephen Wheeles of the Indiana State Police.
"After the autopsy is completed, hopefully investigators will have a cause of death and will know what course the investigation takes at that point," Wheeles said.
At around 4 p.m. Saturday, Jennings County Sheriff's Department deputies responded to the area after a caller reported spotting a body in the lake. State police detectives were soon requested to respond to the scene to assist the sheriff's department with the ongoing investigation. Indiana Department of Natural Resources' (DNR) conservation officers also responded and provided K-9s and other resources.
