PD&S giving away free ads to help local businesses

How about some free marketing help for your local small business?

You can get just that with a free ad in the Plain Dealer & Sun.

Thanks to the Jennings County Economic Development Commission and the Jennings County Community Foundation, the newspapers will be offering free color ads for the next period of time to help local small businesses recover from the economic havoc created by COVID-19.

The ad campaign will be funded by a grant awarded through the JCCF's COVID Response Fund.

That fund was activated when the two organizations decided to expand the original Duke Foundation grant program which was for a one-time $5000 grant to assist one local business survive the pandemic. That grant was awarded to Las Chalupas.

However, the EDC and JCCF were so impressed with the other applicants that they decided to award additional grants to all businesses that had applied for the Duke grant.

"There were so many applicants and we wanted to do something for everybody," explained JCCF Director Joanie Van Horn. To award money to every applicant "was a pretty good feeling."

Among those receiving a grant was the Plain Dealer & Sun.

Publisher Barbara King had applied for the grant, citing how the virus had precipitated a downturn in advertising revenue, which pays most of the bills at the locally owned media.

"The idea to offer free advertising was designed to help both the newspapers and other small businesses here in Jennings County," she said. "We feel this is a win-win, as our free advertising program will hopefully assist a wide range of small businesses and also help the newapers weather this economic tsunami."

The plan is to run the ads together, starting in the July 30 issue, and then every other week. Response will determine the size of the ads and how long the offer is available.

"Businesses can advertise their hours, their specials, new products, safety precautions they are taking or whatever they want," said Barbara.

"It is their marketing opportunity. We hope they take advantage of the program and we hope it helps them in their journey to success."
