EDC, Duke offer grant to help small business

In the wake of the COVID-19 economic shut-down for many small business owners, the Jennings County Economic Development Commission (JCEDC) saw an opportunity to provide assistance through the Duke Energy Foundation, who awarded over $200,000 to support Hoosier businesses.

Working with the Jennings County Community Foundation and thanks to the immediate response of JCCF Director Joanie Van Horn, the application for help was successful. The JCEDC received $5000 to offer one local business financial assistance.

JCEDC Director Kathy Ertel, in partnership with JCCF, is pleased to announce the Jennings County Small Business COVID-19 Relief & Assistance Grant, which awards one $5000 grant to a Jennings County business for rent/mortgage support, health & safety expense assistance, or the purchase of new technologies for ongoing business operations. Eligible businesses must be served by Duke Energy, registered for business in Jennings County, and successfully in operation for at least one year prior to the health emergency declared by Governor Holcomb on March 6, 2020.

Applications for the COVID-19 Relief & Assistance Grant may be submitted beginning Wednesday, June 10 at 8 a.m. Businesses wishing to apply can go to the EDC website at www.jenningsedc.com or go to Facebook. Requests for a paper application can be emailed to the EDC office at jenningsedc.com or call 812-346-2388. Dead-line for submission is Wednesday, June 24 at 11:59 p.m.

The mission of the Duke Energy Foundation is to empower the lives of customers and support the economic vitality of communities.

"We truly appreciate Duke Energy's continued efforts to support small business in rural communities during this unprecedented time," said EDC Director Ertel. "Duke Energy has been a tremendous partner in Economic Development here in Jennings County and this grant is very much appreciated."

The JCCF's Van Horn shared a similar sentiment, saying, "The Jennings County Community Foundation is proud to be a small part with the EDC in helping bring these funds to Jennings County."

"Duke Energy Foundation has continually stepped up to help the community, and we greatly appreciate the opportunity to use these funds to help a small business partner."
