Jailers foil inmate's attempted escape

The Jennings County Sheriff's Office is investigating an incident of attempted escape by a jail inmate.

Jadiah T. Duncan, 31, allegedly ran toward the door of his holding cell when Jail Sgt. Steve Frey opened it to check on Duncan's status. Duncan attempted to push Frey to the ground and run toward a door to a hallway leading outside, but Frey was able to prevent him from reaching the door.

Duncan refused to comply with Frey's verbal orders and continued to fight him until Jail Capt. Evan Ponsler was able to enter the area. Ponsler used a Taser to subdue Duncan; both officers then returned him to his cell.

Duncan had been out on bond for charges of theft and criminal mischief, and had been arrested May 13 for violating the terms of his release, a Level 6 felony. On Tuesday, he was charged with attempted escape and battery on jail officers.

Ponsler was treated and release for a knee injury sustained during the incident.

Man charged with robbery attempt

A Wabash man was arrested May 14 on felony charges including robbery, pointing a firearm, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and misdemeanor drug possession after the Jennings County Sheriff's Office received a report of an armed robbery in Vernon.

Arrested was David R. Eggert, 19, who fled the scene but was located and stopped by Indiana State Police on U.S. 50 near the Jackson/Jennings county line about 20 minutes after the incident.

Officers found a handgun matching the description of the one used in the crime, as well as cash, marijuana and drug paraphernalia. Eggert is being held at Jennings County Jail.

Trash pickup

With this being Memorial Day weekend, trash pickup in the city will be postponed from Monday to Tuesday next week. The city will revert to its regular schedule on Monday, June 1.

Ad deadlines

The deadline for classified ads for the May 28 paper will be 5 p.m. Friday, due to the Memorial Day holiday. The deadline for display advertising remains noon Tuesday.
