Commissioner: County attorney, state to settle auditor-clerk dispute
The dispute between two Jennings County elected officials, Clerk Amy Thompson and Auditor Tessia Salsman, over how to handle transactions between their offices remains unresolved.

Matt Sporleder, president of the Board of Commissioners, says he expects a resolution soon.
"I have instructed Ellie (County Attorney Ellie Bright) to review the state statutes and confer with the State Board of Accounts to find out which way to go," Sporleder said. "Then she will advise the commissioners who is correct."

As detailed in the March 17 issue of The Sun, the disagreement between the two began last Thursday when Thompson came to the auditor's office to transfer funds and file a report as required by law.

The two disagreed about how to complete the transaction, the clerk insisting it had to be done by paper and Salsman just as adamant that it had to be done paperless via a computer software program. Thompson asserts she is following state regulations, specifically citing Indiana Code 33-32-3-6. The auditor contends she is following regulations, too, pointing out that the reporting software arrangement has been approved by the State Board of Accounts as well as both the Board of County Commissioners and County Council.

"I tried to talk to both of them together and it seemed like I got nowhere," Sporleder said. "Both are adamant that they are correct.

"I don't have a side in this but I can't be a mediator since Amy and Tessia are elected officials. So it's up to Ellie and the State Board of Accounts," he added. "I am expecting a decision soon."

According to state law, these types of transactions must be completed by the 25th of each month.

The sooner this gets resolved, the sooner we can get this made into a Netflix limited series.
