Age, fertility are 2 factors in blooming
I have no complaints about plant performance this spring. But, it seems, some gardeners are still stumped by their under-performing plants.

Spring means lots of new babies
Petals have fallen from the redbud trees, and flowering dogwood trees and apple trees. Leaves are out on maple and elm, cottonwood and willow. Grass is green and home owners are out mowing lawns, when it isnít raining. Dandelions and many other wildflowers have scattered their seeds.

Church in need
A prominent thought held by church members today is, "I don't want to accept help from anyone."
Our American upbringing urges self-sufficiency. Our parents taught us that it was rude to ask others for money. The American work ethic has taught us that if you want something, you have to work hard to earn it.
I have wondered how bad a church member's situation has to get before they are willing to ask for help. It seems that most often this is only the case when the situation is a matter of survival - if there is no food in the house, or gas in the car, or medicine for a very sick child. Only then will a person consider asking for help.

Plant propagation
The most common form of plant propagation is digging and dividing which is best done in early spring before new growth or in the fall before plants go dormant. Digging and dividing is great for herbaceous plants but those plants that are considered woody ornamentals do not divide as easily with a spade. In this case we can look to the technique of rooting out softwood cuttings from the mother plant.

States are re-introducing prairie plants
From the Appalachian Mountains to the Rocky Mountains many of America's thruways, state highways and county roads are high speed travel lanes for traffic through fields of corn and soybeans and scattered, mostly small, remnants of the Midwest prairie. Lining these travel lanes grow exotic grasses, such as fescue, which have been planted there. These roadsides are mowed frequently during the growing season and sprayed with herbicides regularly to prevent the sprouting of any plants except exotic grasses.
