The true meaning of honor the father & mother
The fourth commandment tells us that we are to honor our father and our mother and now that we are in a new year I think it would be wise for us to take a moment to reflect upon and ponder these words. What does it mean to honor your father and mother? Taken at face value you might believe that you have kept this command perfectly or at least mostly your entire life but as with all things this command has a deeper meaning that what you might think at first.

Honoring one's parents is merely the first step in keeping the fourth commandment to dig deeper we must recognize and understand that honoring parents means that we honor authority. This command is for both family in the home as well as out in the world.

Five easy tips to encourage picky eaters
(Culinary.net) Feeding an entire family can be difficult enough on its own with busy evenings full of hustle and bustle. One additional factor that can cause even more headaches is dealing with a picky eater, especially a child whose preferred menu ranges from hot dogs to candy.

If you're looking to widen the palate of your picky eater (or eaters), consider these tips to start down a path toward a more expansive slate of family meals.

Bulb has interesting history on how they came to be so popular
Spring bulbs will begin popping up everywhere as temperatures roller-coaster from winter to spring. It has been a mild winter so far so we may see our spring bulb display sooner than later!

As long as the bulb and bloom are safe beneath the soil surface and we get sufficient dormancy and chilling time in the ground, all should be in order to bloom well.

Bulbs will do just fine if they are grown in a similar climate to where the species adapted. The timing and amount of rainfall and temperatures have more to do with success and failure than many of us realize.

Unexpected visitors at the winter bird feeder
There were robins in our yard a few days ago. Its January! This is no time of year for robins. There were five of them. They were in the trees, flying down to the ground and back into the trees.

Robins are common everywhere in the U.S. and in southern Canada in summer. But in the northern states, including northern Indiana, robins are gone in winter. They've flown south, migrated. To us in the northern states, robins are regarded as a sign of spring, harbingers of spring.

Accepts Chairmanship

Mose Gumble has accepted the chairmanship of Jennings County in the near east drive for funds for the starving people of central Europe. The date when the drive will be launched has not been definitely settled.

The county's quota is $1,320. Last year, under Mr. Gumble's superposition, $1,396.89 was realized.

An organization is to be perfected in each township and the hearty support of our people in general is urged. If ever funds for the starving of Europe were needed it is at this time.

The Hope for America
Civil religion and politics will never lead to salvation, and politicians make terrible saviors.  For that reason, we must never embrace the fallacy that ultimate hope lies in the political process and outcome.  People all across the political spectrum need to be remined of this.

Vinomian System names plant species
Most of us are not fluent in Latin so distinguishing between an Aesculus parviflora and an Aesculus pavia may take some extra effort. Throw hybrids and cultivars into the mix and our plant choices may increase with our confusion.
