Blue jay shows up at feeder
My next article, I decided one afternoon, is going to be about the blue jay. Coincidentally, when I sat at my desk to start writing that article there was just one bird on the feeder outside my study window, a blue jay. Further, not only was that jay the only bird at my feeder, it was the only bird in sight. I didn't see another bird in any of the trees or bushes in the yard around the feeder, nor birds on the ground under the feeder or in the lawn beyond. There werenít any birds on the power lines along the road in front of our house. There wasn't a robin or a sparrow or a mourning dove, not one other bird.

'Book-learning' and connecting with God
The good folks at Cokesbury, who supply most of our church's curriculum needs, occasionally sends me interesting mini-catalogs.
One exclusively deals with the new Common English Study Bible and contains sample pages of study guides, pictures and various aspects of yet one more Bible that can help the average person connect more deeply with God and God's Word.

Days are definitely shorter
June 22 is the summer solstice, the day when day and night are of equal length in the northern hemisphere, the official date of the start of summer in the northern hemisphere. Each day since June 22 has been a few minutes shorter than the day before, each night a few minutes longer.

Summer blooming trees
You know me better then to recommend trees that everyone already has in every neighbor across our hometowns. How about some new trees in the landscape that bloom in summer?

Clean living in this world's messy muck
Life sure has changed since I was a teenager. Back in my youth, the normal sequence of events was to work hard and when chores were done we would ride our bikes, play basketball, baseball or some other outdoor activity.
Times have changed. In the middle of summer you can now drive around town and see basketball courts empty, and have a hard time even spotting youth outdoors.
