While the annual Jennings County Democratic Party fund-raiser dance usually holds no surprises, the one held Saturday night, March 24 (1990), kept the audience in suspense.
As the distinguished guest, Indiana Secretary of State Joe Hogsett, rose to take microphone in hand, the crowd was expecting a campaign speech Instead, Hogsett launched into an awards ceremony, with the audience both surprised and eager to learn just who was to receive the Sagamore of the Wabash Award.
Taken completely off guard, Helen Stites just about fainted when her name was announced. Flanked by family members, she accepted the highest honor bestowed by the governor graciously to resounding applause from her Democratic colleagues.

Light and life in Jesus
Spring is here. Trees are budding, flowers are breaking through the ground and the countryside is greening and growing with new life.
There really is something refreshing about longer periods of sunshine each day and warming weather. It makes a person feel alive.
That carries truth for our spiritual lives as well. God tells us that we Christians have been called out of darkness into his marvelous, wonderful light.

Board Fires School Bus Driver
By a unanimous vote of 7-0, members of the Jennings County School Board voted to terminate the transportation contract between the school system and Melvin "Sleepy" Speer.
Speer, himself a former school board member, had two school bus routes, one in Columbia Township and the other being one of the runs to the Versailles Vocational School.
An altercation that took place in the Versailles school parking lot between Speer and some of the students led to the hearing.

God of the 2nd chance
I will soon mark 20 years working in the prison ministry.
What a labor of love I have had in this ministry. The Lord showed me that's where the hurting people are.
The church I was attending then never had a prison ministry. Within a month they started this ministry; I joined the next week.
Originally we started with 25 men and women but quickly it was apparent only four volunteers would remain. I was one of them. Soon many prisons opened their doors to us.

Birds an indicator of climate change
The wind in December, January and February-the wind of winter-blows often from the west and north, strong and cold. It brings freezing temperatures, snow and ice. It brings birds, too, winter visitors that nest farther north including snowy owls, rough-legged hawks, tree sparrows, dark-eyed juncos, snow buntings, Lapland longspurs, red-breasted nuthatches and pine siskins.
