Finding elusive bananaquit
A bananaquit is a bird, a little bird about the size of a song sparrow. It's a bird of the Caribbean Islands, except Cuba, and southern Mexico and Central and South America. A bananaquit has been seen occasionally in the United States, but only in southern Florida.

Cool season weeds waiting in the wings
I was just thinking about spring but then I realized I should just live in the moment and be thankful that I do not have to battle weeds this time of the year! Spring and cool season weeds will be here soon enough.

New Bethel News
Pastor Connie Barr's Feb. 10 message title was "Judah's Sins Brought God's Judgment, Then Restoration" with a Bible base of Zephaniah 3:17-20. She explained that Zephaniah was a minor prophet, not because of lack of importance but that his message was short. She challenged everyone to "look within, around, and above" and to also look up for hope. She discussed the fact that many of us obey outwardly but not from the inside. We all need to repent for wrongdoings and make changes in our life for strength before we come upon great temptations. Leadership is always judged more harshly than followers because leaders know better in the beginning. The question was asked of listeners, "Do you ever join in saying 'if but for the grace of God, there goes I?'" Most nodded heads yes in response to the question and agreed that America is starved for spiritual leading. This was a lesson in preparation for upcoming Lent, and devotionals were passed out accompanying offering boxes for the St. Andrew's Society support in their mission of feeding the hungry in America. They glean farm fields after harvest for leftover grain and vegetables on the ground. Lent will be our time of self-sacrifice and prayer. Pastor Connie also encouraged everyone to underline 1 Corinthians 10:11, 12, and 13 for future reference.

Does God still speak?
Why does God not speak to people like He did in Bible times? What do we mean "like He did in Bible times"? We mean "out loud."
What would we like for God to say now? That we are His children ... that He loves us. If we are Christians, God has said that in the Bible (1 John 3:1-2).
We would like for God to reveal specifics about His will for our lives. Instead, in the Bible, God has constructed moral and spiritual fences inside which we may exercise genuine liberty and not worry that we are outside His will (John 6:28-29; James 2:24; Matthew 21: 28-32; Romans 12:1-2; Luke 22:19-20; Psalm 1; 2 Timothy 3:12; Psalm 100; Exodus 20:1-4; 1 Peter 2:16).

Late February ideal for pruning
In a fit of gratitude, I made a list of the things I loved about my life the other day. I managed eight solid things, none were frivolous; and one prompted the whole exercise: I love warm February days.

Global warming and birds
The sky is light when I get up in the morning now. The days are noticeably longer than they were last month. Longer days, shorter nights, a sign of the changing season, of winter passing, spring is in the air.
