Faith and doubting
In the Gospel of St. John, chapter 20 it states: "Thomas, called Didymus, one of the Twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. So the other disciples said to Him, 'We have seen the Lord.'
"But he said to them, 'Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands and put my finger into the nail marks and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.'"
And so, because of this, Thomas is traditionally called "doubting." The only problem is, the week before the other disciples gathered in that room also had to see Jesus before they believed. They were no different than Thomas.

Daring to Give Kids a Chance
Jennings County sixth-graders will be meeting a new friend next week when North Vernon Police Officer Anthony Burton begins his duties as Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) officer.
Burton, a Jennings County native and five-year veteran of police work, will be trading in street patrols and other routine police work to help students in county schools learn to make the right decisions about drugs and alcohol.
"This will be an excellent opportunity to help kids before they get into trouble," he said, "and it will be a good way to help young people develop positive feelings about police officers."

A brief history of the whooper
According to Arthur Cleveland Bent in his "Life Histories of North American Birds" once the range of the whopping crane was "the Central Canadian Provinces, the United States and Mexico, east rarely to the Atlantic coast." By 1926 however, when Bent wrote about the whooper he stated "the species is almost extirpated and probably breeds only locally in south central Canada." Ten years later, in "Game Birds, Wild-Fowl and Shore Birds," Edward Howe Forbush wrote "The Whooping Crane is doomed to extinction."

Time's a wastin', folks!
It has been three weeks since we welcomed in a new year. Some folks may have made some resolutions that probably have already broken or forgotten about.
Stores are geared up for Valentine's Day. And it won't be long before the Easter displays are on the shelves.
As I write this, I've been watching the nonstop coverage of winter storm Jonas as it barrels its way into Kentucky and heads toward the East Coast. The Weather Channel has been showing power companies quickly trimming tree limbs along the roadways to ensure that no limbs break off during the storm and cause power outages. Hundreds of snow plows and salt trucks are traveling thousands of miles to prepare for the storm or to address the snow that has already fallen.

Hospital Board Seeks Cure for Ailing Facility
The Jennings Community Hospital itself was laid bare to examination by members of the community facility and the Plain Dealer at is annual meeting Thursday, Jan. 17 (1991).
Even though the 1990 financial report wasn't exactly rosy, the board unanimously agreed prognosis is excellent for repositioning the facility on healthy grounds.
Acting Administrator Dale Wernke delivered the annual report, the gist of which was that for the second year in a row the hospital is losing money.
Wernke stated that in 1990, fiscal year ending Sept. 30, total revenues added up to $4.8 million, a gain of about $325,000 from the previous year. However, operating expenses totaled $4 million, about a 5.9 percent increase, and contractual allowances and uncollectibles totaled $1.2 million, resulting in a net loss of $346,000.
