Mary Elizabeth Melton, 96, of North Vernon died at 3:57 p.m. Sunday, June 8, 2014 at the Covered Bridge Health Campus in Seymour.
Graveside services will be conducted at 4 p.m. Friday at the Vernon Cemetery with the Rev. Anthony Sweeney and David Fischvogt officiating. Friends may call at the Dove-Sharp & Rudicel Funeral Home and Cremation Services Friday from 1 p.m. until 3:45 p.m.
Mrs. Melton retired as a Food Supervisor in 1979 from the former Muscatatuck State Developmental Center where she had worked for 25 years. She had previously worked as a designer for the former Regal Rugs from 1942 until 1959. She was a member of First Christian Church, a 64-year member of North Vernon Chapter #183, Order of the Eastern Star, where she was a former Star Point and a former Mother Advisor of North Vernon Rainbow Assembly, International Order of Rainbow for Girls. Mrs. Melton was a 1936 graduate of Alpine Boarding School in Alpine, Tennessee and attended Tennessee Technical Institute in Cookeville, Tennessee from 1936 to 1938. She enjoyed knitting and flowers.
Mrs. Melton was born September 19, 1917 in Celina, Tennessee, the daughter of John and Ona Short Crawford. She married Ralph W. "Crickett" Melton September 17, 1938 in Albany, Kentucky and he preceded her in death November 29, 1994.
Survivors include sons, Ralph (Sally) Melton of The Villages, Florida and James (Terri Jo) Melton of Lexington, North Carolina; daughters, Gail (Ron) Baczkowski of Annapolis, Maryland and Diane (David) Fischvogt of Crofton, Maryland; grandchildren, Jonette (Chris) Vagts of Crofton, Maryland, Bret (Lela) Melton of Lexington, North Carolina, Ryan Melton of Charlotte, North Carolina, Chris (Brea) Fischvogt of Baltimore, Maryland and Matthew (Colleen) Fischvogt of Denver, Colorado; and 13 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.
Memorials may be made through the funeral home to the First Christian Church.
