Dale Leon Pettit, 84, of Seymour, formerly of North Vernon, died at 10:05 p.m. Wednesday, October 7, 2020, at Covered Bridge Health Campus in Seymour.
Graveside services were Monday, October 12, 2020, at Vernon Cemetery with Rev. Phillip Elliott officiating. Matt Hester Post #2021 provided military graveside rites. Dove-Sharp & Rudicel Funeral Home and Cremation Service was entrusted with arrangements.
Mr. Pettit was a 1953 graduate of Vernon High School and was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. He was a lifelong farmer, the road superintendent for the Jennings County Highway Department, director of SEI Data, and had served as a Jennings County Commissioner for four terms. Mr. Pettit was a member and former chairman of the Jennings County Republican Party and a member at Tea Creek Baptist Church, Sagamore of the Wabash, and Jennings County Farm Bureau, where he was on the board of directors. He enjoyed traveling and watching the Cincinnati Reds baseball team.
Born June 19, 1936, in Switzerland County, Mr. Pettit was the son of Harry Clifford and Ruth Aldine Gunnion Pettit. He married Carol Campbell November 4, 1957, and she preceded him in death April 28, 1991. He then married Cecelia Vogel Miller September 26, 1992, at the Methodist Church in North Vernon and she preceded him in death June 7, 2018.
Survivors include sons, Kenneth (Linda) Pettit of Madison, and James (Amy) Pettit and Doug (Della) Miller, both of North Vernon; daughters, Susan (CD) Kinney of Paris Crossing, Cheryl (Greg) McConnell of Fountain Hill, Arizona, and Julie (Darrel) Kemmerer of North Vernon; sister, Marilyn Estell of Columbus; 24 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
Mr. Pettit was preceded in death by his parents; wives; son, David Pettit; and brothers, Ralph, John, and Robert Pettit.
Memorials may be made through the funeral home to the Tea Creek Baptist Church.
